It started near My Dinh National Stadium, where people were gathering hours before an important night for Vietnam. Street vendors were selling Vietnamese flags, shirts and fan gear, while cafés and sidewalk stalls filled with people waiting together.

But later that night, Hanoi completely changed.

Thousands of people poured onto the streets with Vietnamese flags, motorbikes, horns, drums and cheering. In Vietnam, we have a special nickname for celebrations like this: “Đi bão.”

I joined the crowds and even tried speaking English with visitors from France, the UK, Canada and other countries who were experiencing the atmosphere with us.

This is more than a special night in Hanoi. It’s another glimpse into real everyday life, people and culture in Vietnam through my eyes.
