I grew up in western Sydney, Greeks had the fish and chips shop, Italians had the deli, a Scot had the news agency (where I got my first job at 13 as a paper boy doing house runs and selling to drivers at intersections).
There was an old Yugoslav butcher and Aussies ran the hair dresser and the bottelo. There was always someone hanging out at the front of the shops, always something to do and stories to share. People often told us to "move over boys" sick of having to step over the pushies that were often spread from end to end on the footpath. It wasn't anything special, it was just normal. Now it's gone and it breaks my heart to watch my kids grow up like zoo animals, no freedom, their mother constantly scared they will get run over or abducted. Kids just aren't alive these days.
