Short Break in Alsace | Eguisheim, Three Castles & Grand Ballon
On Thursday afternoon, we set off on our spontaneous short break to the beautiful Alsace region. But before crossing the border into France, we spent a peaceful night in the idyllic vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl ā surrounded by vines and absolute tranquility.
On Friday, we crossed the Rhine into Alsace. Our first destination: the fairytale village of Eguisheim. With its colorful half-timbered houses, winding lanes, and flower-adorned facades, it is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. The circular layout of the village around the historic castle is particularly impressive ā perfect for strolling and exploring.
Afterward, we made our way to the Three Castles of Eguisheim (Les Trois Châteaux). High atop a hill stand the ruins of Dagsburg, Wahlenburg, and Weckmund Castles. From here, you not only have a fantastic view over the Rhine plain, but you can also delve deep into the region's medieval history.
Our next stop was the impressive Murbach Abbey. Nestled in a tranquil valley at the foot of the Vosges Mountains, the former monastery complex captivates visitors with its Romanesque architecture and a truly special atmosphere. The imposing church towers and the surrounding natural landscape make this place a real hidden gem.
In the afternoon, our journey continued to Hartmannswillerkopf ā a significant battlefield of the First World War. Numerous trenches, bunkers, and memorials are still preserved here, impressively recalling the fierce fighting and bringing history to life.
We ended the evening at the Grand Ballon ā the highest peak in the Vosges Mountains. We found a parking spot for the night and were rewarded with a breathtaking view of the landscape ā the perfect end to an eventful day.
