Very interesting place! Am wondering if any Elvis "artifacts" are in the museum. The King of Rock & Roll loved the blues and was so influenced by the music.
Large chunks of the Museum's true history are missing from this. The blunt dismissal and departure of Sid Graves to Hattiesburg after being forced out of his position by the Library Board of Directors under Mary Stovall (re:Jackson Clarion Ledger), the relocation to the Museum's Delta Avenue location under Library Director Ron Gorsegner, the failure to mention the contribution of Ms. Fontaine Wells, who brought the museum's displays up to a professional level for the first time and was then dismissed. The resistance of the local Coahoma County officials to ANYTHING that elevated recognition of African American culture persisted until the mid 2000's. 2023 statistics note that Clarksdale's population is over 80% African American and has a 40% poverty rate. A 2021 study by a committee of HBCU economists found that 94% of revenue from tourism in Clarksdale resides with white-owned interests. The Blues is still alive...in fact, the blues never really died.
