Fun fact! Did you know that the name “Stand-up” comedy is a sneaky reference to comedians “Standing up” on stage when they deliver their jokes? fun little easter egg

"This is your bank!" People were critiquing advertising slop even then

Modern stand-up comedy in India is a young art form, however Chakyar koothu was prominent in Trivandrum and southern Kerala during the 16th and 17th centuries. It had all the attributes of modern stand-up comedy and is widely considered to be the oldest known staged comedy.

I’d like to know about really really old time comedians though. Like jesters and writers like Shakespeare sprinkling in his comedy, and then a step further to know some of the exact jokes they made with context

Liking that you went back to this well. Your enthusiasm shines through.

Thanks to present this wonderful history

No mention of Bob Hope?

Awesome video! Thanks for the knowledge! Great job!

Zoom stand-up doesn't have close to the same crowd presence as in-person, but VR gets pretty close.

I recently enjoyed watching 'Funny on Purpose: The History of Comedy' on YouTube and learned a lot about the evolution of comedy. As a layman in comedy, I'd like to know if it's worth mentioning the birth of SNL and the major players involved in launching it, such as Al Franken and Jim Downey. Michael Keaton even suggested that he and other cohorts played a significant role in financially supporting the development of comedy clubs on the East and West Coast and in Texas. Although I defer to your expertise, I'm interested in the relationship between this series and other nightclubs and SNL.

Since the pandemic began, I have been going down a rabbit hole exploring the history of comedy. Growing up, I watched SNL and Conan, but I'm only now discovering Conan's profound influence on comedy. The art of comedy is now becoming one of my primary focuses for mental health and relaxation, rather than just something to pass the time. Thanks for putting this video together.

This was great! And the hanks for shouting out khadji

Id love it if you did a video on andy kaifman's influence especially on altcomedy

really good overview and synopsis! you have to be one of the most underrated video essayist’s/streamers out there. keep up the good work!

Excellent video!! Thanks🎉

Awesome video!!

I love stand up and I loved this video essay. Well done Jangles! the music is great too :)

surprised you didn't mention baltimore comedy legend tom myers.

more daring than george carlin's 'seven dirty words' routine, myers' 'bong hit transplant' bit really pushed the boat out in terms of what comedians are allowed to get away with saying on stage. hope to see a breakdown in the next episode

The first standup comic was in 1861 named William penn he name philly the city of brotherly love 😂

great video.
Being from the UK, I'm pretty familiar with how comedians and comice actors flourished during and especially after WW2 thanks to the ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association) whose members played to the troops on home and foreign service. All sorts of entertainers were thrust together and formed relationships that bore comedic fruit. Most comedians on powstwar radio shows were products of that world - perhaps the most famous and succesful being 'the Goons' (Peter Sellers and friends).
Was there any sort of similar thing going on in America - or did Bob Hope do it all on his own? And if there was, do you think Black comedians in particular profited from the sort of desegregation/inclusion that occurred in the US Army in the late 40's/early 50's
Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Need more of this please, really well done
