Welcome to San Marino, the world’s oldest surviving republic and one of the smallest countries in Europe! San Marino is also a brand new country for our vlog (#39/46) in our quest to visit and vlog EVERY country in Europe! We are getting closer to our goal!
San Marino is a tiny microstate completely surrounded by Italy, but despite its size, there’s a surprising amount to see from medieval towers and ancient walls to incredible views from the top of Mount Titano.
We climb San Marino’s famous towers, explore the historic old town, watch the changing of the guard, get our passports stamped, ride the cable car down to Borgo Maggiore, eat some local food, hunt down gelato, and end our day with a visit to the mysterious Witches Passage. And yes, it was VERY hot, so there was plenty of sweating involved along the way.
San Marino is often visited as a day trip from nearby Italy, but we quickly discovered that this tiny country is worth staying for at least one overnight. The views alone are incredible, and standing on the medieval walls overlooking the Italian countryside makes it easy to understand why this little republic has managed to survive for more than 1,700 years.

When Marino the founder of the community died ( September 3, AD 301 there was still the Roman Empire) he told the others : " my legacy if freedom, be always free men". He was later proclaimed Saint by the Catholic Church.
