I believe I know which boat my grandfather had with Capitol Gearboxes, and you had to know how to get it into neutral. Also maneuvering they are WAY slow to go in and out of gear, which is a problem in tight quarters swinging big wheels. My boat had the same problems, but with 26X26 props and 1.75:1, that long unpredictable delay in and out of gear along with unpredictable slippage in neutral made that 44' boat a handful docking where there is a lot of stuff to bump into.
For those of you familiar with these gearboxes, I know all about the control valve rebuilds and pressure regulator adjustments.
I am told the GM Allison gearboxes are a loser, but I have no experience with them.
Twin Disk 509s (now long obsolete???) were trouble free in a heavy duty commercial application.
