Prevent crime by investing in mental health care.

I think we should go back to the days when the cops lived in the neighborhoods they policed. If the neighborhoods aren’t nice enough, let’s upgrade the neighborhoods. If the cops can’t afford to live there, let’s improve their pay or subsidize it somehow. Cops should know the people they are policing, in my opinion.

Thank you Jimmy for bringing this forward!!

Community Policing can start with Police LIVING in the Community they patrol or are assigned to.
Inviting Cops to local events and BBQs is good.

That is surprising that Berlin has more police per capita. But our police are a subculture of a violent society that sells guns at Walmart. Would their aggression really disappear--and their judgment improve--by adding more of them? Many things would have to change within police culture first. The big changes made in Baltimore are, however, remarkable, and if that model of policing could spread, there would be reason for hope.

If the police were more trustworthy, honest, and helpful the Public would be friendlier and less antagonistic. That is achievable with Independent Review Boards, vest cameras (and turning them off or obscuring them while at work is an enforceable crime itself) etc. But Who Watches The Watchman? .... If the Courts didn't slam the poor and excuse the wealthy; If we were all equal under the Law. Many Americans despair of seeing our dreams of Equality replaced by Oligarchy and a King.

Thank you for having Malcolm Gladwell on. His informed and lucid thinking is always refreshing. Indeed vital, in these depressing times.

This is surprising that Europe has more police in their cities but it makes sense. This is very eye opening.

Good that a Canadian is analyzing America and its anger and arrogance

"People don't read things until the end" really sums up many of our issues.

The legal system needs to start holding these serious offenders and repeat offenders accountable. A lot of these people are given light sentences, if any and released on bail the same day. And others that should actually be in psychiatric hospitals (mental institutions) permanently, are just released and are back doing crime.

Police in Europe don’t spend their time giving tickets or bothering the public. They are there when they are needed, to help. They work calmly
and without brandishing a firearm.

Interested in Malcolm Gladwell's discussion of police work. Isn't the technique of identifying the people involved in the most crime much like that show about a high school where the principal asked the teachers to identify the problem students?

"gotta calm down, we're watching you"

@NathanDunston 41 minutes ago

Does that comparison include all police agencies? Or only LAPD vs the local equivalent in Berlin? For example: county sheriff's department, highway patrol and other state police, and Federal law enforcement, of multiple types?

That may be that we have less police but them supporting ice and not respecting our journalists who had press badges visible were shot at deliberately and one was trod over by a mounted policeman- so however many we have, they need to serve and protect our community; not backup ice.

Meaningful guest and conversation with Gladwell. . People do not, generally, understand the gun issue. I used to be one wanting to ban military style. ( Multiple rounds and mags).Any one can convert easily. .

@limbiclove9487 1 hour ago

Hmmm. ICE is an example of very over aggressive offensive sort of policing. I hope that they are abolished and that funding goes to regular police departments so they can increase their numbers and instead of focusing on arrest numbers focus on other issues.
