Classic Travelogue

Thank you. I traveled overnight by coach before Amtrak when I was a kid but at 81 years old I require a private room with en suite toilet and shower to enjoy a good night's sleep and avoid a seating companion, snoring, electroinic noise, loud conversations and stink feet in coach . Indeed, flying is as cheap as coach. I would ride the day train between Savannah and New York. I worked the "Palmetto" ("Chicken Bone Special") from DC to Savannah when I was a Train Attendant between 1987 and 1992. The "Chicken Bone Special" was always packed.

CHICKEN BONE SPECIAL

Boogie to the rhythm
of the Soul Train beat,
Steel wheels crankin’
drivin’ up the heat.

Chicken Bone Special
Train 89
Bobbin’ and swayin’
up and down the line.

New York to Savannah,
all along the way,
Getting’ off and on
each and every day.

Pork packin’ mommas
shufflin’ down the aisles,
Lugging country hams
800 miles.

Back-breakin’ baggage
at every stop,
Wearin’ me down,
feel like I’m gonna drop!

Chicken bones flyin’,
free ice from the bar,
Drinkin’ and Feastin’
in every car.

Shake! Rattle!
& Roll!
FunkEEE
Railroad Soulllll.

My ankles couldn’t take the coach seats! They need to be elevated!

Coach is not bad on Amtrak..back in 1981 I took my 3 year old son on the Coast Starlight from San Luis Obispo CA to Tacoma Washington...a 28 hour ride... beautiful

7:45 Washington DC engine switch. My favorite part of the ride.

Did this trip from Baltimore to Ft. Lauderdale on both the 97 and 98 in February of this year. It was okay. Only disappointment of coach was the rude passengers and lack of privacy

Another great Amtrak adventure, I love it!

Nice! Would enjoy future overnight in coach videos. I'm 70 years old and last Nov took Amtrak rt from and back to Ft Lauderdale in coach to get to and return from a cruise. Booked the train rather than air because I was booking during the shutdown and thought train would be more reliable. For me, the reclining coach seat with the leg rest was close enough to a bed to be comfortable. And I used my travel sized cpap machine for sleep apnea. The main issue, I think, is privacy. I've booked coach rt and back across the country -- NYC - LA - Portland - NYC. From NYC to Portland, my longest overnight stretch will be two nights because I have various stops along the way. Portland - NY will be four nights straight in coach. My friends all think I'm nuts. I'm looking forward to seeing the country and think the price for a sleeper car solo is fucking insane. I've done many overnight bus and train trips before, but never more than one night. My major concerns are staying washed, shaved, exercised, and fed. Figure I'll come home a bit stiff, grungy, and hungry but entertained. Would love to see a report on multi-night coach travel with suggestions before I go!

11:40 The solo sleeper room will be an exciting addition! Before the Viewliners came along, Amtrak’s former Heritage sleepers once featured solo rooms, which used to be branded as “roomettes”. The roomettes we have now on both the Viewliner and Superliner fleets were originally known as “economy bedrooms”, while the bedrooms were labeled as “deluxe bedrooms”.

It's all I can do to make it five hours in those new wretched Siemens coaches. I wouldn't even try this trip unless I had a room, but thanks for sharing.

Bro, how is it that you’ve managed to do ALL of the last 5 video ideas I had (and kept to myself) in a row. That’s seriously crazy

Great video! I love the Silver Meteor! It’s awesome!!

I had a friend take that route a few years ago. The electric locomotive that was put on at DC had a fault with the system that supplied electricity to the rest of the train. It took five hours for Amtrak to find a replacement. He almost missed his train in NYC.

Thank you for a positive take on the new “viewliners”. Frankly, I’ve read nothing but kvetching about the loss of Superliners. Trust me: even one night in a Superliner upper berth should put paid to this nostalgia.
