The secret is to practice all the time and be prepared for it to take a long time. 😅

Notice the Rat Pedal on the floor - one of times I saw John Scofield I was able to go to the side of the low stage and check out his pedalboard - the Rat settings were approximately - Distortion 9 o'clock - Tone - Fully Clockwise - Volume 3 o'clock - playing through "2" Mesa Boogie Studio 22 combo amps with wicker grille. There were "2" Boss Digital Delays on the board. Pedals were stacked on top of each other.

One of the best ways to develop your ear is to slowly sing every line you play (in practice). If you can't sing it, you are not hearing it. Hearing is what music is all about. One more point, when you are trying to learn a difficult linear idea, if you slowly sing it (your mind/ear), this difficult line will be far easier to play. It took me a long time to come to grips with this idea, but if you are serious about your music, you will sing everything.

3:35 I heard 'Morgen' by Richard Strauss!

Like sitting in on Giant Steps

I hear it as cmaj with a minor 6

One could, of course elaborate greatly on these points but it’s very succinctly put by John!

Is that steven seagal interviewing john scofield

What's his first video, please?

Anyone know what year this was filmed? Mid 90s perhaps?

Back in those days Sco was developing mathematics. His playing overtheoretical nonsense. Now his playing is that of an idiot which is great. He’s a reincarnation of Monk and Mingus 👍👍

i think he forgot to develop an ear for melody
