Honourable Mentions
I’m aware that Merry and Pippin have been somewhat shortchanged by this list. Not only is their friendship with each other a wonderful thing, but so too is their friendship with Frodo, and Quickbeam, and Treebeard. And, also, after they split up, Merry and Pippin both have some wonderful friendships of their own. Merry and Eowyn, Merry and Theoden, Merry and Elfhelm. And of course Pippin and Gandalf, Pippin and Beregond, Pippin and Faramir. Any of these friendships could have made the list, but if I’d included them, I wouldn’t have been able to talk about some of the lesser known friendships in the Legendarium.

Also in the tale of the Children of Húrin we also get an awesome friendship between a guy called Túrin and an elf called Beleg, but it would be very hard to tell their story without getting into mad spoilers, and in the near future I plan to release a whole First Age playlist untangling that story. So I’ll get to Túrin and Beleg in good time.

Happy Tolkien reading Day everybody!

The "I never thought I'd die side by side with an elf" exchange is still one of the best little moments ever put to page or screen.

I really think that Gimli single handedly has fixed the relation ship between dwarves and men , and also between dwarves and elves . It is like at the beginning of the age of men all the races are finally reunited before everyone else leaves Arda for men

It does make me wonder if, in all his letter writing and correspondence, Tolkien was able to, after the War and military protocol could be set aside, reconnect with any of his former batmen. WWI isn’t the kind of experience one would want to reminisce over with a pint at the pub, but I believe Tolkien would be the kind of person who would have liked to keep tabs on those who served under him.

Slightly suprised that Beleg Strongbow and Turin Turambar aren't on the list but to be fair accidental murder probably takes some points off of the friendship ranking.

"Not if we hold true to each other." Aragorn said it best when said how the Three Hunters would succeed yet little did he know that he was describing the essential core of the best of friendships.
"You would die before your stroke fell!" Escalate? Legolas' first instinct when someone threatens his brand new friend is I'm gonna kill you.
Faramir and Boromir honorable mention with them at the top of that list for friendships. Brothers they may be but yes they were each other's best friends as well.

I recall being so confused about Frodo and Sam's relationship when I was reading the books as I kid. Like, why did Frodo get a gardener? Did Sam have his own gardener? What was Frodo's job? How did he afford things, like a gardener? Nineteenth century British class distinctions was a strange subject to learn from Lord of the Rings.

Honorable mention: The amazing Lotr YT community.
All the content creators and their audience are so cooperative and sweet.
Love you all❤!

I love that scene with eomer and gimli and legolas they portrayed how nimble elves were compared to men as obviously someone drawing on their leader would lead to them being attacked. Especially at that range but legolas was so swift that he could pull an arrow from his quiver and draw it to eomer before they could even react and had no choice but to hold on legolas since he had already beaten them to the drop and they couldn't risk striking at that point.

I find it kind of funny (in a good way) how so many stories in Tolkien's work come full circle. A dwarf is responsible for regicide of an early king of the precursor civilization to the Rohirim, then 1000 years later, another dwarf is responsible for saving the life of a Rohirim king to be. Almost like it's balancing the scales or something. It's these small details that make this world and the stories told about it so memorable.

Can we all agree that line from Bilbo in the beginning of this video is a roast worthy of Shakespeare? A man on the same level as Tolkien for sure

Happy Tolkien Reading Day! I can’t wait to get through this video properly when it’s a more awake time of day 😂

I hope Mandos keeps Fëanor waiting in his Halls for eternity. I have a thoroughly justified loathing of that elf.

One of my favourite friendships in the world of Tolkien is the heartbreaking tragic friendship between Belen and Turin.

@dolam 4 years ago

I would include as an honorable mention Turin Turambar and Beleg Cuthalian.
