EXPLAINED: What Really Happened to the Mary Celeste

FORGOTTEN HISTORY

67,033 views

For more than 150 years, the fate of the crew aboard the Mary Celeste has remained one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries. In 1872, the merchant brig was discovered drifting through the Atlantic Ocean with her cargo intact, her lifeboat missing, and every passenger and crew member gone without a trace. There were no signs of violence, no pirate attack, and no obvious explanation.
Was it mutiny? Pirates? A rogue wave? The Bermuda Triangle? Or is there a far more logical explanation? In this documentary, we examine the historical evidence, separate fact from fiction, and explore the leading theories surrounding one of the greatest maritime mysteries ever recorded.
Featuring:
• The discovery by the Dei Gratia
• Captain Benjamin Briggs and his family
• The Gibraltar investigation
• Why the piracy theory failed
• The alcohol vapor explosion hypothesis
• What modern experiments reveal
• Why historians believe the mystery may finally have an answer

What's your theory?

The ocean is really good at keeping secrets.

But, even in an emergency, wouldn't the captain take a moment to log an entry in the log book explaining what was going on?

Anyone else hit like before watching so they don't forget?

This is just a small token of appreciation the for DECADES, it feels to me, of listening to one of the absolute best channels on YT.

Sir, if you ever find the time, I think that a high level overview of Operation Halyard (and related ops.) would be a story to tell, but with deeper digging on the regional players as well..
I must know this story better, for my ancestors, and my unborn children..

I wish the whole team good health 👍

I have no special knowledge of what goes in a captains log book, but I have to believe that if there was a whoosh, or even the fear of one, the captain would have stuck it in the log book.

Hi Mike. There was one story that was related to the Mary Celeste shown on the old show In Search Of. In 1903, a young sailor was sent ashore to gather sand and found a hut with a skeleton in it , and next to the skeleton was a bottle with a note in that mentioned the Mary Celeste and her crew. The episode can be found on YouTube.

Michael, you tell an amazing story, thank you and God bless. For me it’s a very sad and tragic event. I cannot imagine what the captain felt when he realized that he had just doomed not only his and his crew’s lives but his wife and baby girl. The time left had to be pure hell. Imagine trying to tell that part of the story. We may not know exactly what happened but we do know they were never seen again. We don’t know if they were able to stay on their life boat and slowly die one by one of if they got caught up in severe weather and they all went down together or even worse and they turned on the captain and his family for his ill fated decision. The captain did not have any bad intentions but none the less shit went way south and that is the worst outcome one would think about while the decision was being made. God bless all of them.

The captain would have made a log entry if they were going to leave the ship

@williamcarey8529 1 month ago

Thank you for making this video. I love how you cover so many subjects. I agree with the theory that the Captain gave the order to "abandon ship" due to the fumes in the cargo hold from leaking casks. Thank you again.

@Slap_and_blackjack 2 months ago

That ship was cursed from the get. If I'm not mistaken, the original captain died either right before the maiden voyage or on the maiden voyage and then another captain died immediately after that, I guess renaming it didn't break that cycle

Great Research!!!

@Orpilorp 1 month ago

That is a pitifully sad story. Who knows how far she drifted after they left the ship in the lifeboat. It would be very disconcerting to come apon a lifeless ship like that. Thank you for investigating this old historical puzzle.
