I noticed that in Johnny’s illustrations that the facial features told a lot about the content of the story. Cannot put it all into words. The crowded illustrations fantastic with so much to look at and look out for. Most enjoyable. Thank you Pete.

Johnny Gruelle’s characters, books, and illustrations enriched my childhood. This is an outstanding episode in your series. Thank you!  GFP

A super tribute to Johnny Gruelle, Mr Beard. Thank you.
I find the 9 books of the raggedly doll siblings Ann and Andy truly wonderful. They made fortunes for both him and his publisher P F Volland.
Their success is down to their non-human nature and how incredibly beautifully they are painted by Gruelle. They are thin watercolour on board with some ink contours but they have 2 planes and it is the exquisitely drawn and slightly impressionistic natural backgrounds that combine to make them objects of enduring beauty.
The 1929 Wall Street crash did have an effect and led to Volland selling off his works and illustrators. The Gruelle plates and original artwork were bought and published by M A Donahue. They descended through the family and some sold on the market about 10 years ago. They were  magically beautiful and I was outbid (MASSIVELY so) on 2 I went for. I still think of them - the colouring and the large round eyes. Illustration at its best.
Thank you for making my day (again.)

It's wonderful when an illustrator gains renown with signature characters, often leading to financial success. Thanks, Mr Beard, for featuring so much of his diverse and 'ancillary' works to provide a more complex picture of multitalented Johnny Gruelle.

Self-taught, and with this level of talent and accomplishment, is incredible.

The freedom in the "for children" illustrations is sublime.
What a treat.
Thanks.

As always, a lovely video. I’d venture to say that your videos are, in and of themselves, works of art. Thank you!

Splendid thank you Pete ..

another wonderful trip through the works of a talented artist.
Thank you, Mr Beard, for all your hard work to produce these beautiful videos.

All these beloved characters of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy plus earlier art by such a gifted, self taught, imaginative artist/storyteller. My mother owned a first edition of Raggedy Ann and Andy and The Magical Wishes. I fell in love with this book and all the quirky characters i.e The Snoopwiggy and The Wiggysnoop. I still have that book and sadly only Friendly Fairies is what remains of my entire collection . Thanks so much for this wonderful presentation.

I have been watching your channel for quite a while and I just want to say thank you for helping to keep the memories of these artists alive. Like with your aptly titled series, these illustrators are truly unsung in the art world and your channel serves as an amazing collection for discovery and recognition. As an aspiring/practicing illustrator myself, your channel has served as an endless treasure chest of inspiration for me to pull from, always finding new artists to be amazed by and learn extensively about. Thank you!

Gruelle's choice to honor his deceaased daughter Marcella in his work was touching.

This reminded me of caricaturist Al Hirshfeld's memorializing his daughter Nina (with her name famously  hidden in his drawings)

Labors of love.

I've heard of and seen Raggedy Anne, but did not know who the illustrator was, very interesting as always.

It is sad that Gruelle's life was cut short. What a remarkable career he had. Thank you for giving us an opportunity to become familiar with his work.

Wonderful work , Thank you Pete.

Another artist I'd never heard of! Thanks again!

Thank you ,it always a  joy  to watch your videos

I am very interested in children's illustrations and I didnt know this illustrator. Thank you for this video!

This was such a beautiful moment.. It's so sad he passed so early; what a great artist.
Thank you.

Wow! Thanks, Pete. I wasn't familiar with this artist. He’s another one of those figures whose work is better known than the creator himself. As for the doll, it’s well-known in my country (Brazil), but I didn't realize so many stories had been created around it. I used to think it was just an old toy that inspired the horror movie *Annabelle*. It’s a shame it was created out of the pain of losing one's own daughter.
Thanks a lot for sharing another gem like this. All the best.
