India-US Talks Stalled: Is This The End Of The Trade Deal?
India and the United States have hit a major roadblock in their long-awaited trade agreement — but the deal is not dead yet. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says the India US Trade Talks have reached a “plateau,” where further concessions could become extremely difficult. The warning raises a major question: will India or the US blink first?

The India US Trade Deal has been under negotiation since February 2025, with both sides seeking better market access and stronger economic ties. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently held talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who said the agreement was not imminent and that several sticking points remained. For India, the biggest concern is uncertainty over US tariffs. Donald Trump’s new law could pave the way for tariffs of up to 100% on countries continuing significant purchases of Russian oil, creating fresh pressure on Indian exporters. At the same time, India wants better tariff treatment and protection for sensitive sectors.

The India US FTA therefore remains a high-stakes issue for India US Relations and International Trade. The US is India’s largest export market, with Indian goods exports reaching $42.79 billion between April and August, up from $40.39 billion a year earlier. Any additional US Tariffs On India could affect businesses, investor sentiment and the India Economy. As part of the India US Trade Agreement negotiations, New Delhi is seeking a balanced outcome rather than unilateral concessions. Sitharaman has also criticised the increasing use of tariffs as a negotiating weapon.
