I read Mortimer Adlers "Aristotle for everybody" book before I started reading Aristotle's own writings. That helped me understand Aristotle better.

Begins at 15.07 mark - chaps.

As an adult coming to classical ed I totally recommend just going through the memoria press studies and plays. I have been doing this with the Christian studies for the upper school. I started with acts and actually I went a head and bought all the Christian studies and they have all been great I’ve gone through early church history and am about to start war of the Jews.

❤

As an adult who took the self-education-never-ends lesson to heart, that injunction to "get one under your belt and keep cruising" is huge. Between homeschooled high school and a very solid college education with a strong humanities underpinning, I was pretty familiar with the broad strokes and big ideas of ancient Greek literature, largely via simplified translation and secondary source, some excerpts of primary source in college. Within the past year, though, I've been revisiting Homer in full text (Lattimore), mythology via Hesiod and Bullfinch, and digging deeper into Plato and Aristotle directly. Still just a toe in the water, but definitely adding context and detail to that existing broad-stroke education from my teens and 20's.

I was really surprised to hear Plato described as more accessible than Aristotle! "The Republic" was a bit of a slog for me in a lot of places, even despite the familiar allegories (the Cave, the Ring) - lots of reread, parsing, rephrasing to myself what the thrusts of the extended dialogical arguments and illustrations were. More than worth it, but engaging with it was a workout (probably a solid sign that I need to read more - The Apology is on my TBR list). I read "The Nicomachean Ethics" not long after, and found the style there a lot more direct, more like sitting in a college lecture or reading a more modern academic essay - here's the thesis/argument, does it make sense, yes/no, here's why/why not, building the ideas and testing them logically. Maybe it's down to the translations I had to-hand; I didn't put a great deal of energy into getting choosy there, I grabbed the first copies I encountered and dove in, haha.

When does Memoria Press produce Memoria Press three consecutive Guides to the National Greek Exam like it has to the National Latin Exam. Such guides are invaluable for Middle and High School students to prepare for and master those exacting exams. It would be a tremendous help for the ancient languages community.

What advice would you give me as a Frenc independant researcher, writer and university professor? I would love to help reintroduce the classics to the youth and the adults, but which format choose, if creating a private university is too complicated? The state of education here is terrible and I dont even know if young people nowadays can actually read and understand simple texts... however one needs to do something. Some kind of bookclub?

no mention of the lyric poets? sappho? archilochus?
no mention of callimachus? apollonius? you really need callimachus to have an understanding of catullus and vergil.
these seem like major oversights.

Paul has a Joaquin Phoenix kind of voice

Alex, let's go!

Why does dude keep saying “ ank-shunt”?

A regular person is NOT going to read Homer at first.  They should start with the lectures by Rufus Fears or the book by Edith Hamilton = up beat, fun,  more relevant to modern life.
