I lived 2 miles from Pontypool park, every Saturday as a kid I knew when they scored because I could hear the roar! 15,000 on a Saturday watching pooler play half cocked middle of the merit table teams. Those days are long gone, moments destroyed by the WRU, whose greed and ambition killed local rugby.
Thank you for sharing this. We got the afternoon off. Watched it in the west hall of Croesy comp! 48 now. Scottish wife. She can't believe the All Blacks played Pooler!
That 89 All Black Pack, Awesome, those Neath boys in 89 at there best and these lads just turned up and took them apart. Brilliant to me, and there backs, rugby league nicked most of them afterwards and can you blame them. A thing of beauty.
Was there with my colleagues from Eagle Star Insurance in Cheltenham. Went to see our colleague and friend Dave Churchill playing in the 2nd row for Pooler. Later in the game he swung a few haymakers at Gary Whetton. I think they mostly missed !!! A few days earlier I'd seen my hometown club (Cardiff) run the Blacks close for 60-65 mins, before they inevitably pulled some magic out of the hat to win 25-15.
Shame that we'll never see those days again. Fitting that this fixture should be at the latter end of Pooler legend Graham Price's career. Used to book half days off work to watch midweek matches like this and Neath v NZ
