A daily walk-around check isn’t just something you’re supposed to do before driving an HGV — there’s a very serious reason behind it.

In this video, I’ll show you the ABS warning light I found and explain why taking a few minutes to properly check your lorry before setting off is so important.

But later in the video, I’m going to tell you about a driver I used to work with who never used to bother doing his walk-around checks.

And what happened as a result is something I’ve never forgotten.

I’m not going to tell you what happened here… you’ll have to watch the video to find out.

Because sometimes, those few minutes walking around your lorry can be a hell of a lot more important than you realise.

Aye, vehicle checks are super important. We once had a driver at the company that I work for (who didn't last there long) who was very lax with his checks. One time he had a puncture repaired on the second axle of a 4 axle 32t hook loader but didn't bother to re-torque the wheel after doing 30 or so miles. I was asked to take it out a couple of days later and refused to drive it. The rust staining on the wheel from the nuts was obvious from 20 feet away and upon closer inspection the nuts had worn half way through the wheel and with the wheel moving about it had also destroyed the hub. Cost the company thousands in repairs and was very lucky that the DVSA didn't catch it in that state. Worst thing was that the driver claimed he didn't notice anything wrong yet when I drove it about the yard you could hear it clunking straight away! The vehicle was a potential death trap!

Get a rag for your fuel tank... clean it , because vosa will see that as a diesel spill.
If a company gets pulled and there score goes down good practise to get it back up is to pull all your vehicles into your maintenance garage for a safety check... that bumps your license up and out of the red. Compliance is key. Although if that driver had been pulled over or had a serious accident the directors TM and driver would have been on a public enquiry . Tyre company should have seen that ages ago? Bad maintenance and the driver was a divvy.
