The assault on Sevastopol in June and July 1942 by Colonel General Erich von Manstein. During Operation Sturgeon Fishing, the Wehrmacht's 11th Army and Romanian units fought fiercely fortifications, forts, and Cape Chersonesos, breaking through the Coastal Army's defenses after crossing the Northern Bay and storming Sapun Mountain. Despite the massive use of Richthofen's Eighth Air Corps, super-heavy artillery, and the Dora gun, the assault resulted in bloody hand-to-hand combat, resulting in approximately 35,000 Axis casualties and the collapse of the Soviet defense.
The event was attended by Vice-Admiral Filipp Oktyabrsky, Major General Ivan Petrov, Lieutenant General Dmitry Kozlov, Lev Mekhlis, Wolfram von Richthofen, as well as divisions of the 54th and 30th Army Corps of the Wehrmacht, the Crimean Front and the Black Sea Fleet.
