What really happened to Tim Roth? | Impossible To Ignore

From the raw anger of Made in Britain to Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and The Hateful Eight, Tim Roth has built one of the most unpredictable careers of his generation.

He emerged from working-class London with no traditional acting background and became one of the defining faces of British cinema in the 1980s. Then Quentin Tarantino came calling, Hollywood opened its doors, and Roth somehow moved between violent criminals, historical dramas, blockbusters, television and deeply personal filmmaking without ever becoming a conventional movie star.

But behind the career is a much more complicated story.

In this retrospective, we look back at Tim Roth's life, his extraordinary body of work, the films that shaped him, the tragedy that changed his family, and why he remains one of cinema's most compelling outsiders.

I’m a huge fan of Tim Roth..what’s your favourite performance of his?

Some actors have iconic roles. Tim Roth has an iconic presence. Even with five minutes of screen time, you remember him.

Can’t believe it’s been 40 years. Any film with Tim Roth in is worth a watch.

I love how incredibly respectful you are towards sensitive topics like his childhood abuse and the loss of his son. This separates your channel from the rest...you don't dramatize and prey upon people's misfortunes.

I'm still sad about Lie To Me being cancelled

One thing that always impressed me about Roth is that, for a man of smaller stature, he plays aggressive / dangerous characters very convincingly, it is all attitude, he is genuinely and believably intimidating in those roles.

Roth was excellent in the "Lie to Me" TV series. Sadly there were not enough of us fans for the show. Oh, and "Tin Star" series was great too.

“There’s always a nervy, watchful, faintly dangerous energy underneath …”

That’s so perfect.

He's up there with Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Daniel Day-Lewis, Christian Bale and Tom Hardy as one of the British GOAT actors.

There is no role I've seen Tim Roth in that I was underwhelmed by. He's a fantastic actor. I love him in 4 Rooms that may actually be my favorite character of his.

I have always thought that 'Made in Britain' was one of the truly great UK television dramas of the 1980s, if not of all time. An uncomfortable watch for sure, but one you'll never forget. Tim Roth's performance was extraordinary.

Meet him in Charleston in the late 90's, in a dive bar, no one recognized him...except me. I spoke to him at the bar....he told me he was filming Gridlock'd ...very down to earth guy.

these actor and actresses grow older you start thinking how much you enjoy these people and miss them when they are gone

@jamescorvett 3 months ago

Roth is highly underrated IMO. He's never the same guy, a great character actor

Lie to me is my favourite crime series. I watch all 3 seasons every year. It's criminal that it was cancelled.

Mr. Fade To Black, if you aren’t writing screenplays or novels, you should be, your prose is phenomenal. Thank you for sharing your work with us. I especially appreciated your sensitivity around the tragedy of Roth losing a son along with his childhood sexual abuse.

@ConcreteDino 3 months ago

I like your sensitivity shown to Roth's personal loss.

I wish Lie To Me would have exploded. What a great show. Cast had great chemistry.

Honestly he did "disappear" for me. I first really noticed him after seeing Rob Roy. I thought the villain was one of, if not the best movie villain I'd ever seen. So I had to look him up and noticed I had actually seen him before in a few movies and never realized it.
