One of my favourite training rides back in the early 70s,from Bolton up to Whaley, Milton, Dunsop Bridge, Slaidburn my favourite place on Earth over the Trough to Lancaster Blast back down A6 thro Preston back over Belmont to Bolton, 100miler a grand day out
My first bike, in the war years was a sit-up and beg monster, but when I realised it was a means of exploring our lovely countryside, football and cricket were forgotten! I was in early teens and In those war years there was hardly any traffic (petrol rationed), no signposts, not much food available (food rationing) even if you had the money which we hadn't! So cheese sandwiches and an apple were the norm. The bike was gradually made more fashionable, with dropped handlebars, cable front brake and single fixed gear and Brooks B17 saddle. I got a part time job at the local bike shop, starting as errand boy then apprentice mechanic. A new Accles and Pollock chromo-molybdenum frame was purchased and my first road bike was ready! With a school friend we would set off from Burnley with a Barts half-inch map and the world was at our feet! Wharfedale, Malham Cove, Bolton Abbey, then further afield to Wensleydale, Swaledale, Ripon and Dentdale. 70-80 miles were normal, with occasional 100-120 miles on a long summer day! Some of the steep bits were get off and push, but that was all in the day's work. In spite of the many cobbled road stretches in those days those were some of the happiest days in my long life. But here I am, 97 years old next month, with arthritic knees and very limited mobility. But I have an exercise bike and pedal the roads I love in your company with PC set up before me! The miles fly by and my leg muscles keep strong despite other forms of exercise. Its a great substitute for the real thing, especially when you know most of the routes like the back of your hand. I am very grateful for your familiar posts.
Well that was a real treat! A really grand day out. Thanks for posting, I am inspired to have a go at this route. Good to see a bunch of ‘older guys’ enjoying their bikes.
Just as you are going down the other side of the trough at about 8:19 there's a cyclist coming the other way, it was me. I've just edited my footage of the day and seen you.
Great video Dave been looking forward to this for a while actually sitting watching it in corfu with a glass of wine I will be back on the bike when I get home love to you all
