Buried History with Jonathan Reed

This isn't a story about a hobby dying. It's a story about a room that quietly lost its reason to exist, one piece of infrastructure at a time.

If you're interested in the physical history of communication technology — old radio equipment, broadcasting stations, and the buildings that were built around them — subscribe to Beyond History With Jonathan Reed for more.

📻 Topics covered: FCC amateur radio licensing history, the Novice and General license classes, Heathkit and the decline of homebrew radio, Japanese transceiver manufacturers, TVI committees, MARS and Vietnam-era phone patches, ham radio repeaters and autopatch systems.

I apologize, there was a pronunciation error; it's 3 decades, not 30 decades.

I was a teenager in the late 1960's. One day the phone rang. I answered it. It was my brother in Vietnam on a phone patch.

Number of holders does not matter, it is the number of ACTIVE participants.

Online you get all sorts of personalities, including from the elitist and gatekeeper types. If I did not have my license, the Internet would have led me to believe that HAM license prerequisites included old age, grumpy remarks about Baofeng radios, lamenting the loss of Morse code, and cringe-worthy word play attempts about SHTF scenarios.

The in-person community can often depend heavily on location, I have experienced some really welcoming and active clubs and scenes. No pretense or elitism, genuinely great people.

Also, the antenna restriction is yet another example of how HOAs are really just totalitarian extremist organizations...

I saw telephone dial on a radio on a friend's belt and asked, "Is that what I think it is?" He said yes and I became WD9-GXB.
Really loved Heathkit and am saddened every time I remember that it's gone.

15:45 This is a fascinating look at how hobbies change with each generation. Ham radio clubs were once important places for learning, friendship, and technical experimentation, but the way people connect today has transformed dramatically. A thought-provoking video that explores not just the decline of a tradition, but how a passionate community adapts to a changing world.

I visited the MARS station at
at Ft Devens, Army, MA, in
1970, after being stationed
nearby in the US Air Force in
those days. 😅

I carry my HT everywhere. Malls, conventions, restaurants, on the bus, and walking. Many people are surprised amateur radio operators don't NEED vintage rigs and huge antennas to START with. Our local radio museum staff helps new ham get on the air. We don't ridicule $20 import HT's. Early models splattered all over, but new ones have purer signals that are FCC approved. If I can hear a new ham, I don't tell him to "get a REAL radio." 73 de WV7HS/W7TBC

Here in a New York City suburb, most of our active
club members live in their
own house, though a few
of us are able to operate
from our apartments here. 😊

It’s like a lot of everything else. Churches, freemasonry, bowling, softball leagues, scouting, etc. People just don’t want to get involved with other folks anymore.

My wife and I used to drive motorcycles on long trips in the mountains is California. She studied and got her extra. We then put a system together of helmets with a mic and a speaker on 450.

I guess I'm lucky. Near me in St. Pete FL, is a radio club of 120 members. However, I go because it's about the only social activity I have as an octogenarian.

I got my Novice ticket back in 1962 and was off the air during all of the changes you have mentioned, although I became a volunteer examiner around 15 years ago. The air waves have sure changed. The newer equipment is an absolute delight with ease of operation, agreeable sounding sideband and no drift or chirp problems, if made in Japan. There are always ways to disguise antennas for HOA reasons with ARRL books covering the subject, and many HOAs will grant permission for Hams. Fewer stations are on the air now where years ago in the cities there were so many hams that regular DX and local roundtables were daily experiences. Those who talk about the good old days must be referring to ham radio!

March 1987 was a milestone as well. That was when the FCC gave some voice and data privileges to Novice class and made it where it didn't expire after a year. This got more people on 10 meters from 28.3 to 28.5 for USB operation. This was also during a peak solar cycle so the band was very active. This is likely why Uniden built the President Lincoln and HR2510 to cater to this market. Many CBers studied and got their license to get away from the then crowded 11 meter band. The 2510 could also be easily modified for 11 meters to have a radio to talk on both. FCC didn't like so many were doing this and eventually forced Uniden to build the HR 2600 which couldn't easily be modified.

Now “radio clubs” are something very unknown to me. I was raised on black and white TV shows.. But now days, I listen to old radio shows while I play Sudoku on the TV. I’ve been doing this for several years.
