The industry is booming, generating millions in revenue – and more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon. The term "coach" isn't legally protected. Anyone can call themselves one, even without any training. This also attracts providers who are primarily driven by profit. Coaching sessions cost anywhere from a few hundred to over ten thousand euros.
One German coaching couple goes even further. They raise hundreds of thousands of euros through crowdfunding campaigns. The money apparently flows into dubious corporate structures with connections abroad. Where did the money go? And where does this supposedly successful company pay its taxes?
Opaque structures are not uncommon in the coaching industry. The film meets with author Charlotte M. Raven, who reports: "This industry is anything but light and love. This industry is cutthroat business, blatant self-promotion, and intense manipulation." If people fall prey to the wrong providers, it can have serious psychological consequences.
How is it possible that people with dangerous coaching methods and dubious business practices earn so much money? Carolin Hentschel and Eva Kunkel set out to find out, a journey that takes them to Portugal, Florida, and Bali.
