27:05 "You get there faster by going a little slower" I know for sure that translates to life in general. Most of the time you waste more time rushing to the finish early than it would have taken you to do it the right way. Career, family, school, health, spirituality etc. Take your time and be thorough.
North Loop with Sr. Capt. Abbt is a constant training piece for maydays and orientation at fire departments around the nation. Glad hes here to tell his story.
This message is an E-Salute to all the firefighters out there. (A salute through e-mail Lol) Choosing to become a FF shows that you have a caring and adventurous mindset. It encompasses helping others while they're vulnerable and helpless, while in a setting that's exciting and hazardous. I always appreciated what ya'll do, but a few months ago I really learned how much I appreciate your response to calls. I used to use a mini torch to kill spiders in this bush outside my house. I would spray the bush down with my garden hose, to prevent a fire starting. I figured that fire is the best pesticide, being non-toxic and instant. However, I underestimated the danger of fire spreading. I walked inside for 2-5 minutes and walked back out to see this bush smoking. I didn't worry at first, thinking that my garden hose and pouring buckets or water would be sufficient. The inside of the bush was thick with dead growth. (morning glory grown around a potato plant stump) I think the water didn't penetrate the outer leaves but the wind from the hose spray fanned it. It was like the hose made it worse! Next thing I know, it was billowing thick yellow smoke. No flames, but a hose and bucket after bucket of water didn't kill it! After calling 911, the FF came and put it out. I felt so embarrassed, guilty, and stressed that I was shaking. However, the firefighters were very cool to me! They told me about the dangers of what could have happened and all that good stuff, but they didn't make me feel more ashamed or guilty. I thank them for this! Yelling or scolding me would have just made me shut everything out. I certainly learned my lesson needless to say: Fire does get outta hand quicker than you would think! Here in Ventura CA, we just had the 'Thomas Fire' come through with 75+ mph winds, burning around 1000 structures. At nearly 300,000 acres burned, I was surprised how many houses should have burned but were saved thanks to FF's. Thank you all and God Bless. B Safe mkay!
For some strange reason I had never seen this video? Will say as a retired master certified firefighter (captain) from a different city fire department this is one of the most well done and powerful fire department-based lessons learned training videos I've seen! Great job Chief Mann, narrating and, to all the HFD firefighters that took the time to relive and tell their personal stories, thank you! I have worked with many of HFD personnel and they all are tops in my opinion! Allen P Retired Firefighter (Captain)
Great video guys. Thanks for posting. I am retired, however I am going to share this with the training officer at my old department. Thanks again, and God Bless.
Seeen on youtube in Europe - a spiked 1 foot pipe that atttaches to a snorkel that can pierce a roof and then sprays 360 like a super sprinkler head. Useful for here?
Stupid Stupid people making a disaster out of an easy job.
1. Vertical Venting is one of the stupidest fire fighting tactics of all times. It risks lives unnecessarily and Only allows the interior fire to grow. It increases radiant heat and ignites more material inside. This fire needed horizontal venting while reading the wind direction and WATER!!!! WATER!!!! WATER!!!. Through the ceiling into the attic!
2. Did you do a 360 to find the fire location and horizontally vent at the fire area and then extinguish it from outside? Did you just Run Heroically into danger like 95% of American fire fighters do? Did you have to pull back to do what you should have done from the beginning? It's just called Heroic American Fire Playing! It's a JOB and should be done in the Quickest and Safest way possible.
3. COMMON SENSE and LOGIC should dictate your Plan of Action not heroic "Search and RESCUE!" You are going into an unfamiliar structure, not knowing the layout and not knowing where the Potential victims are. You can't see the hand in front of your face. The chances of finding a victim are slim to none. If by some miracle you do find someone, then you have to drag or carry them back the way you came through the smoke and fire. You are protected but they aren't. What good have you done for the victim?
You find the fire room, horizontally vent and extinguish all Visible Burning Material BEFORE you go inside to PLAY HERO! You have quickly eliminated all visible flame, lowered the temperature by hundreds of degrees and eliminated the creation of New heat and toxic gasses. Then, you just may be able to be of some use when you go in!
4. You can see the burning room? Hit it from outside and eliminate the threat! Did you have FUN IN THERE? Do ignorant civilians tell you how Heroic you are? Do the rest of you "Brothers" reinforce what a hero you are? Childish! Not a Strong and Positive Work Ethic!
All these guys did is tell us how stupid and heroic they are. Not how intelligent they are. Children at Play with NO consideration for the families that depend on them!
NO fire fighter should even get hurt let alone killed by a burning object. You Safely eliminate the threat by Thinking and being a responsible person, not Play with it to get Off! I can't believe how ignorant grown up humans are.
No, No! Don't tell me I'm a fire fighter hater or I don't know what I'm talking about. Tell me where I'm wrong!
