Drum Teacher Reacts: Missioned Souls - Rosanna | Deep Dive Drum Analysis

Thanks to a mystery PayPal request for sending me to this one!

I've reacted to Missioned Souls before, but this time they've taken on one of the most iconic drum grooves ever recorded:

Toto — Rosanna.

And trust me...

This is NOT an easy drum part to play properly.

The Porcaro Shuffle is one of those parts that can look deceptively simple when you see it written down, but there's an incredible amount of coordination, control, feel and speed involved in actually making it sound right.

And you've got an 11-year-old drummer playing it.

Seriously impressive.

I really enjoyed this performance from the whole Missioned Souls family. The ensemble parts are played beautifully, the vocals and harmonies sound fantastic, and every member of the band has a demanding part to execute.

There's the shredding guitar, Dad locking everything down on bass, the big keyboard and synth parts, the guitar solos — and of course those fantastic family harmonies.

After the reaction, I go much deeper into the drumming.

I use footage of myself playing Rosanna painfully slowly to demonstrate the coordination involved, before speeding things up to show the speed component.

I also use the Drumeo transcription to break down some of the details in Jeff Porcaro's playing.

This is exactly the kind of drum analysis I love getting into — taking an iconic part and actually figuring out why it's so difficult to play and what makes it work.

I’ve seen other drummer reactors who actually said that the drumming is difficult. But ICE made it look so easy.

Thank you for this in-depth reaction . I love Missioned Souls; they bring a lot of joy to my life—not just through their amazing music, but above all through the happiness they radiate and the fact that they remain so down-to-earth!

Really appreciated the breakdown of the Porcaro shuffle. Best explanation so far that I have seen on youtube.

As many times as I've watched this, I've missed Ice's call at the end. Your pointing out details like that are part of what makes your reactions so interesting and appealing.

My favorite thing about this family is that the parents put the kids front and center and also expect them to carry their weight. They cut them no slack. And guess what? The kids come through every time. They are seasoned pros in children's bodies.

Dude... I'm with you and I have said it since the song was released. It is arguably the best song ever recorded. This IS NOT an easy song to cover. Thus very few bands even try it. And to do it at the level MS did it is pretty wild. There are sooo many things going on in this song that it is insane. Jeff Parcaro's drum intro already sets the song up for greatness. It's genius. And it also IS NOT easy! And Ice got it! And as far as I know Toto recorded it in one take! And then Paiche and Lukather take it into the little jazz fest at the end. That supposedly was not part of the song, but Paiche and Lukather were having so much fun they just kept jammin it. And the engineer kept the recording running. When they listened to it they guys said "Hell yeah! Leave it!" So the engineer just put a fade out on it. And there we have another layer to the song. Crazy! It's more than a song. It's a frecking masterpiece. It is like a Picasso or Rembrandt of music. I can compare it to Stairway To Heaven in the way it progresses, and all the levels and layers and time signature changes and the little intricacies that are put in all over to keep every verse and chorus different then the previous one. But I have to go with Rossana at the top spot.

Thanks for the reaction. Ice said in an interview that he found this song difficult to learn.

We knew that YOU would do the drum analysis right. Great reaction. Respect to you and Ice.

The jazz style outro is my favorite in this song, or any they do actually, as it's the closest to a freestyle jam from the four main musicians... LOVE it and wish they would do some more of it! Great reaction!
