Following the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States faced an unprecedented aerial deficit. With only 176 combat planes left operational in the entire Pacific theater and fewer than 1,000 first-line aircraft worldwide, American air power stood at the brink of collapse against the German Luftwaffe and the Imperial Japanese Air Service. Yet, an extraordinary industrial mobilization was already underway. Driven by pre-war directives mandating the production of 50,000 combat aircraft per year, civilian factories transformed overnight, producing airframes while training commands converted hundreds of thousands of civilians into pilots, navigators, bombardiers, and ground crew technicians, supported by the dedicated service of WASP ferry pilots.
Behind the frontline pilots, the Air Service Command and Air Transport Command engineered a global supply network spanning 110,000 miles. From salvaging battle-damaged B-17 Flying Fortresses in improvised field depots to airlifting field hospitals to Alaska and ammunition to Guadalcanal, logistics anchored the air war. In the Southwest Pacific, the Fifth Air Force rallied from a battered nucleus of 14 surviving bombers to smash enemy convoys in the Bismarck Sea using low-altitude skip bombing. Alongside the Seventh Air Force—deploying cannon-firing B-25 Mitchells—and the Eleventh Air Force in the Aleutians, American aircrews methodically dismantled hostile island networks across the Pacific.
In Europe, the Eighth Air Force launched the historic daylight precision bombing offensive against German industrial centers, enduring savage dogfights against Fw 190 and Bf 109 interceptors alongside P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightning escorts. Simultaneously, the Ninth, Twelfth, and Fifteenth Air Forces secured tactical air supremacy across North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. On the other side of the globe, the Tenth and Fourteenth Air Forces conquered the Himalayas, flying treacherous resupply missions over "The Hump" to keep Claire Chennault’s bomber wings striking Japanese strongholds. By 1944, American air power delivered total air superiority across every hemisphere.
