Meeting people where they are is especially important when someone is experiencing “word salad,” because their communication may reflect confusion, emotional overwhelm, disorganized thinking, psychosis, neurological issues, severe stress, substance use, or another condition affecting how thoughts are connected. “Word salad” refers to speech that may contain words and phrases that don’t logically connect or follow a clear pattern. It can sometimes appear in conditions like Schizophrenia, mania, dementia, traumatic brain injury, or intense psychological distress. When interacting with someone in that state, the goal is usually not to “win” the conversation, force logic, or correct every inconsistency. The goal is safety, dignity, connection, and grounding.
