In this video, I take another look at the Swedish M40 Mess Kit — a classic military cook set with a simple, practical design that has stood the test of time. Also tried cooking ramen to test heat control and usability.
This is a Redux version of my original video, cut down to focus on the main points of the review, including the mess kit itself, the burner and cooking setup, and how it performs when put to use outdoors.
If you’re interested in military surplus, bushcraft, camping or outdoor cooking, hopefully this gives you a useful look at the Swedish M40 and what it’s like to use.

About 3 years ago I picked up a stainless steel version for the ridiculously low price of £14! Turned out it was marked for the Swedish Civil Defence organisation and came with the Svea burner.
It turned out that you CAN buy a simmer ring that fits the larger, Mil Spec Svea and Trangia burners. They're titanium or stainless and look like a standard one but have 10 little holes around the rim. Can't remember the name of the maker (it's not marked on it) but if it comes back to me I'll let you know.
Apart from stripping the paint off and adding the simmer ring the only mod I've done is to add a 20mm wide belly band in black webbing. It fits around the complete kit and slots through the bracket on the main pot. Stops everything from rattling around.
Weighing in at 1.5kg it's nowadays used mainly for brew ups by the lake or seaside while kayaking rather than hauled along on hike but I make sure I won't leave this one behind.
Finally, if you like ramen have you ever tried the infamous ramen bomb? Ramen, instant mash potato and protein of your choice - I tend to go for hot dog pieces or corned beef cubes. Bon appetite!
EDIT: Just found the advert for the one I bought in 2023 - can you believe that price?

The one problem it has that it is really damn heavy for one person, especially if you are just going to boil water. Would love to get the aluminum version and see how that would work.
One cool thing you can do with this is to use the stand/windshield as a twig stove in case you forgot to bring fuel.
