Emily Douglas refused to curtsy to the Duke of Westfall before two hundred members of London society—so the proud duke locked the ballroom doors and refused to let her leave.
She was an independent artist and the daughter of a merchant. James Stanley was a former naval commander, one of England’s most powerful dukes and a man accustomed to obedience. Neither expected their battle of wills to follow them from London to Venice—or to become a love that one careless piece of gossip could destroy.
What if the person you loved had never betrayed you, but fear and the words of strangers convinced you that they had?

The Duke Let His Daughter’s “Mama” Leave—Then Chased Her Carriage Through the Rain. PART 2 RODERICK
A NOTE FROM THE CREATOR
I chose to write this story because gossip and unspoken assumptions can destroy romances, friendships and families when people fail to confront one another peacefully and ask for the truth.
Emily’s refusal to curtsy was not simple rebellion. At fourteen, she watched her mother bow and beg a titled creditor for more time to repay an unfair debt while he judged whether her humiliation was sufficient. Emily never forgot it. She learned to associate submission with powerlessness and vowed never to make herself small before a powerful man.
James was shaped differently. Naval command taught him that orders prevented disaster, while inheriting a ruined estate forced him to rebuild through discipline and relentless control. Those qualities saved Westfall, but they also became his flaw: he treated emotional uncertainty like another crisis he could command.
I paired their opposing personality types deliberately. Emily protects herself by resisting and withdrawing; James protects himself by controlling situations and concealing vulnerability. His control awakens her fear of humiliation, while her retreat awakens his fear of losing what he cannot protect.
Both must grow. Emily learns that vulnerability and admitting a mistake are not surrender. James learns that love cannot be commanded or secured by force. The man who first locks a door to stop Emily from leaving later waits outside her home in the rain, respecting her right not to open it. When he finally offers his mother’s sapphire, he asks Emily to choose him freely.
The recurring views of Westfall House, Venetian palazzos, corridors, galleries, gardens, canals and carriages are intentional. They keep you inside the characters’ world and reflect their growth. Westfall begins controlled and silent like James; by the epilogue, its halls are filled with children, charcoal drawings and laughter.
Every wound, personality pairing, motivation, conflict, setting and stage of growth was deliberately developed by me. AI tools assisted with production, but Emily and James—their histories, psychology, choices and emotional journey—are my own creation.
