Relive the excitement and emotion! Award-winning photographs from a photo contest capturing the charm of the 2026 Yosakoi Festival are on display in Kochi City.
From seasoned veteran dancers to innocent-smiling girls, the passion and dynamism of the dancers are palpable.
The "Yosakoi Photo Contest" is being held at the Kochi Yosakoi Information Exchange Center. The exhibition features 50 winning entries, selected from 496 submissions from across Japan.
The special prize winner was Masahiro Sasada from Aichi Prefecture, whose work was praised for its "dynamic energy and the powerful presence of women."
Other captivating photographs include a radiant smile that defies age, and a heartwarming image of a father carrying his tired son on his back. Each photograph is brimming with charm that draws the viewer in.
This woman came to see photos of the winning teams—
Dancer from "Natsukicho" (22):
"Our team is called Natsukicho. (The main performers) are diagonally in front of me, so I'm out of focus in the photo."
Q: Which one is it?
"This one, this is me. The woman diagonally in front of me is dancing with me."
The main subjects of the photo are her fellow dancers, and her own face isn't very clear. However, she says that dancing at "Yosakoi Summer" in 2026, as a first-year working adult, was an unforgettable moment.
Dancer (22) from "Natsukicho":
"It felt like I was reliving my youth. I was happy, or rather, I felt it was special, to know that even as a working adult, there's a place where I can experience youth through Yosakoi."
Kenichi Takeishi, Kochi Yosakoi Information Exchange Center:
"I hope you can feel the smiles of the dancers, the dynamism of the formations, and so on. The Yosakoi Festival is over, but we are exhibiting photographs of the dancers that evoke the feeling of the Yosakoi Festival, so I hope you can immerse yourself in the lingering emotions of Yosakoi."
This exhibition is being held at the Kochi Yosakoi Information Exchange Center until December 8th.
Also, "Yosakoi Returns," featuring performances by popular teams, will be held at the Harimayabashi Shopping Arcade in front of the Kochi Yosakoi Information Exchange Center.
Six teams, including Junin Toiro, Obiyamachi-suji, and TACYON, will perform their passionate dances three times: on October 10th, and in November and December.
