Imagine being domineered by your mother-in-law, sent into depression, put to the ECT machine and whatever else was thrown at her. Absolute hell on earth ! Poor woman. My heart goes out to you Bill....and your mother !

Three babies in quick succession would make it unsurprising if she had postpartum depression.

RIP Bill Oddie. He is finally at peace now, as he had a pretty hard life. One of my childhood heroes.

That wicked grandmother...keeping a mum from running to her crying baby. And after one stillborn child...unbearable for the poor dear.

RIP Bill Oddie. Born in Rochdale, Lancashire and grew up in Quinton, Birmingham. Despite his difficult childhood, he gave so much to everyone else. Whether it was through entertaining people and making them laugh or whether it was making everyone more aware about nature and the importance of looking after our wildlife, he was an extremely positive influence on the rest of us. God bless you Bill Oddie, you will be very much missed.

The definition of toxic mother in law. How heartbreaking

What a shame that grandmother seems to have poisoned that family.

This was a rewatch for me after hearing of Bill Oddie’s death. Absolutely heartbreaking to hear about his family and early life. What an appalling woman his Grandmother must have been, however he was able to discover the truth that he was seeking. Rest in Peace Bill 🕊️🦢🦆🦅

I had a massive bout of depression at 55. It arrived out of nowhere. I was a successful working person with two grown up children and a happy marriage. Thankfully therapy and the love of an amazing woman put me back on track but it was an awful experience. I totally sympathise with Bill. RIP you funny man.

What woman eould not suffer from depression after having to go through labour , knowing her baby was dead. Then being prevented from caring for the next baby, and then finding the baby had died. Every womans instinct is to go comfort and care for their baby if they are crying. I should think her anxiety when Bill was born was off the scale. And to have her mother in law in the house, probably exascerbated her, especially if she held her partially responsible for her baby's death. I hope, Bill, it has helped you to know the truth of your Mothers' situation. These days, medical treatment would have been very different. All the best to you and your family

Long ago, when my mother in law was born around 1910, there was a thinking that you would “spoil” the child if you reacted to them crying. My mother in law scoffed at me for going to my baby when he cried. Said he should be fed on schedule and left to cry it out.
That was how she brought up her son and I can confirm that it was a very cold upbringing and had a bad effect on her son. I never left my own son with her as I knew he would be ignored!
Anyway, I totally ignored her advice!

Bill's dad needed to face-up to his mummy and support his wife, he failed. Life is complicated 😪

@laurenshannon2703 11 months ago

Bill lives because his mother loved and protected him. Poor poor woman.

@lianefehrle9921 1 year ago

She was depressed and the mother in law told son to put her away!! That old woman should have been the one that was taken. This poor mother having one child and not being able to see him.

“She had a miscarriage at 5-7 months” No ma’am, she didn’t have a miscarriage that late in pregnancy. She had a stillborn baby

His poor mum went through so much and then a horrible mum in law (basically a husband who didn’t protect her from his mum). Imagine having to let your baby cry so much it died and grandma still stay with you . Thats so evil. Hos poor mum. His grandma robbed him of a sister and of a mother because of her ways .

Goes to show we shouldn’t judge anyone, including our ancestors - unless we know the whole story.

Bless him ,that he was able to see his Mom differently by the end and have empathy for the reality of her situation and what it stemmed from,I hope it brings him some peace and I wish him health and happiness. He deserves that ❤
