‪@imogendaisyg‬ is likely to be the rower with the most perfect technique. The ‪@HenleyRoyalRegatta‬ finals race of 2022 probably saw one of the best technique performances ever recorded, and I am very cautious with such claims.
In this video analysis, I am going through the most import traits of Imogen Daisy Grant's technique step by step. If there is something to watch and study, this is it.

I would also like to point out that the American sculler that is also racing at that race has insanely good technique too!

@VectorsTrainer 1 year ago

literally tried making that adjustment of not rolling the shoulders back and getting the arms in like the single arm row, dropped a free 2 splits over a 500 piece. insane

Thank you for the added strength exercises! I have only been rowing for 4 years (57 year old master) and have been messing around, trying to find exercises that "mimic" rowing motions but you pretty much nailed these! Thanks to the Henley people as well for the great footage!

Thanks for the breakdown and the emphasis. Useful points to consider.

Sorry to double-tap the comment here, but talking about the recovery, elongating the low torso, I note that her knees spread just a bit to allow her trunk to come toward the stern, but she is not laying out through her knees. I have been looking for some sort of sweet spot for knee width in my own rowing, and have been reluctant to spread at all, to keep from over-extending, so my body over has been a bit stunted, I think. I am 180 lbs (81 kilos) soaking wet, so find that the light weight videos you do have been really helpful. Seeing her do this, I have some confidence now that a little bit of my upper body passing between the knees is not a bad thing , if I control the arms and keep the core actively engaged. That might also help isolate my hamstrings for the controlled leg extension. SO god to see someone doing this so well. Thank you again for this!

What you just explained in this footage is what I said in my previous post. She’s not finishing at the sit back rather at or around the quarter slide and therefore transferring the weight to the middle of the boat and getting good boat run. Look at the bow boat it’s barely digging in at all

Thank you for this sculling video. One comment that I have concerns how Ms. Grant starts her torso swing before her arms are extended on the recovery: a coach at a sculling camp told us that this is what you do at high race ratings, not at lower ratings.

I agree

Imogen is a good chance to make this video. 95% of people You wouldn’t get to unless You are presenting a good technique on a top athlete. I experienced a lot of athletes who had amazing technique and nobody believed how they got to where they got with relatively low fitness levels.
The technique is (debatably and for argument sake only) approx 15-20% of final score on the water. I’ve created a template where this percentage falls in to very well. If we take continues paddle split a 50% of power and PB 2k split a 100%, then we come to a good proportioning of pressure for training expressed in percentage rather than split for individual athlete. It gives an option to ask rower to produce 110% pressure that makes him/her feel going beyond and going to next level.

Thanks! Great inspiration, looks so natural and easy. But it is not to me. It seems a little like when I get tired I try not to ballast my arms and just use them to finish and extract. But if I do so, the rate automatically goes up while not going faster and I still go tired very fast:-)

I'd love to see some suggestions on setting up the boat. I've only been rowing for a year, and I'm quite short. I row a club boat, so I'm somewhat limited to what adjustments I can make, but I always feel like the angles aren't quite right for me, and I'm not sure what to do about it.

I see that she learned her rowing at my old college of Trinity Cambridge. There's a strong setup there at both college and university level, feeding into the national squad. Great to see that it can produce results like this.

Bloody shame that lightweight rowing is being phased out of the Olympics - lightweights often seem to have the best technique as they can't rely on pure brawn.

Even Imogen wouldn't be competitive in the open weight class...
