Psychologist Gabriel Rolón appeared on Perros de la Calle (yes, today, Tuesday—he changed his popular Wednesday slot just for this week) and reflected on boundaries, relationships with exes, willpower, emotional negotiations, and how to end a relationship.
"You keep fighting with your ex because you don't want to end the relationship, because getting along badly is a way of relating," he pointed out.
"The first thing you have to do to end a relationship is to be able to ACCEPT THAT IT'S OVER: no one should grieve for what hasn't been lost." "In every resolution of something that ends, there is something that is lost." "You have to accept that there is a place that you lose. When you end a relationship with someone, you don't just lose the other person, you lose the place you occupied."
Regarding willpower, Rolón said: "It's not the same to have a depressive attitude toward life as not to have one; sometimes it's not voluntary." “I’m sure that even that small amount of willpower needs to be used. It’s small, but it needs to be used,” he added. “We all have a very small capacity for willpower. That tiny capacity can make all the difference. Life’s greatest challenge is being able to deal with yourself.”
“Control your euphoria because you’ll ruin your life,” he maintained. “You’re a dangerous place for yourself.”
Does love hurt? “Only if it’s love. Love always hurts, which doesn’t mean it hurts all the time or that it brings suffering,” Rolón replied.
