Brilliant explanation! A rationalist at his best.

Yes, it is true, since marudhu was talking about spirituality and maha Periyava, here is the point, Sankara Matam was sincere in practicing sankalpa only during the time of Mahaperiyava. After his time, it has largely become a platform for power acquisition. I foresee this shift applying to most other matams as well. Sankara Matam maintains a strong network within its own caste community. In contrast, if you look at the Ramakrishna Mission, you’ll find that saints from  the so-called lower castes have become revered Swamijis. They welcome followers from all Hindu castes because Sri Ramakrishna had a truly inclusive spiritual vision, and his mission genuinely embodies the philosophy of Adi Shankaracharya. On the other hand, while Sankara Matams claim to follow the lineage of Adi Shankara, in practice they do not reflect his true teachings. The appointment of new pontiffs in Sankara Matams is restricted to those who come from several generations of Smartha tradition — typically Brahmins — as if only they are eligible to understand and represent the Vedas. But is practicing the Sama Veda really some kind of rocket science? Did Adi Shankaracharya ever instruct his disciples that only Smartha Brahmins should succeed him? Certainly not. His teachings were universal, rooted in Advaita — not in caste or hereditary privilege. Adi Shankaracharya emphasized self-realization through knowledge of the Self (Atman), not birth, caste, or lineage. His Nirvana Shatakam is the ultimate proof: it speaks of the Self beyond name, caste, creed, and ritual.  Here is the Nirvana shatakam,  நிர்வாண ஷட்கம் – ஆதிசங்கரர் உரை
