The Ati is a Negrito ethnic group in the Visayas, the central portion of the Philippine archipelago. It is believed that they are the first inhabitants of the archipelago, coming from Borneo where they first settled 30,000 years ago. But in recent years, due to encroachments into their territory and greater opportunities in the cities, many have moved from the mountains to live in urban areas. Cheryl Baldicantos caught up with some of them to find out about their modern lifestyles and what they are doing to keep their traditions alive.

We tested our daughters genetic origin. And there are MANY different roots from Ireland, Central and Southern Europe, India, Southeast Asia and it turned out my daughter carries also Ati genes.
Now that I know that it is clear why many of my wife's family member are very dark, have a special nose and are often small. Noone in my wife's entire family has curly hair though. And many have a deep knowledge of wildlife. Even if they often live in cities for at least fourty years.
The Ati in Panay are well known for their knowlegde of herbal medicines.
We Filipinos can find strength in our shared history and culture no matter the race nor even religion nor language.
