This was the first cross-over between hard rock and rap. Completely new at the time. The song was originally done by Aerosmith, but RunDMC put their spin on it, and used the original artists to collaborate. Can't stress how groundbreaking this was in the 1980s.
This song had a TON to do with making rap accepted in the mainstream. I was 8 years and went wild when I heard it as a kid. Opened up a whole new world
Aerosmith was a big band in the 70s, but by the mid 80s they were fizzling out. Run DMC decided to sample one of their songs and Aerosmith joined in on the collaboration. This jump started Aerosmith back to the front and gave them new life that lasted for another 15 years of hits. I lived through this, lol.
I was an Army Brat living in Germany when this came out. All the American kids wore Adidas and "Thicks" (The thick shoe laces Run DMC wore). When Iran threaten American forces in Berlin we had to stop wearing anything that made us look American. Scary time, but still...You took me back to one of the best times of my life!
Steven Tyler of Aerosmith wrote this song after seeing the comedic movie Young Frankenstein. Igor famously said to Dr. Frankenstein.., “walk this way”.
