THE BUILDER — What Does God Want Me to Do With My Life?
*Luke 6:46–49 | 1 Corinthians 3:10–15 | Ephesians 2:19–22*
We spend much of our lives building something—our marriages, families, careers, ministries, reputations, and futures. We naturally measure progress by what we can see: what we've accomplished, what we own, and what we've achieved.
But Scripture asks deeper questions: *What are you building on? What are you building with? And what if your life isn't ultimately about what you're building, but what God is building?*
In this message, we look at the words of Jesus, the teaching of Paul, and the beautiful truth that God is not simply helping us construct the lives we planned. He is building something greater through us. Our foundation is Jesus Christ, our lives must be shaped by obedience, and we are being joined together as His church—a dwelling place for His Spirit.
In This Message:
1. *Build on the Right Foundation*
In Luke 6, Jesus describes two builders who hear His words and face the same storm. The difference is that one puts His words into practice while the other does not. Hearing Jesus is not the same as building your life on Him. Obedience is where the foundation goes deeper.
2. *Dig Deep Before You Build Up*
The most important work often happens beneath the surface, where nobody can see it. What we build above ground depends on what we're willing to do beneath it. The storms of life don't necessarily create our weaknesses—they reveal them.
3. *Build Carefully With What Lasts*
Paul reminds us that Jesus Christ is the only foundation, but we must still be careful how we build. The things people admire today may have little eternal value. Quiet faithfulness, forgiveness, serving others, and obedience matter even when nobody notices.
4. *Measure Your Life by What Matters to God*
A successful career, a beautiful home, accomplishments, and possessions are not necessarily wrong. But none of them can tell us whether we've built a life that matters to God. There is gold that earth doesn't recognize, and there is straw that earth celebrates.
5. *Recognize That God Is the Builder*
Ephesians 2 turns the picture around. We are not simply building our own lives—we are also being built together in Christ. God establishes the foundation, brings us into His household, joins us together, and makes us a dwelling place for His Spirit.
6. *Let God Fit You Into Something Greater*
The Christian life is not an isolated project. God has given each of us a place in the body of Christ. Our gifts, obedience, and service belong to something bigger than ourselves.
Three Questions to Ask Yourself
*What am I building on?*
*What am I building with?*
*Am I surrendering myself to what God is building?*
Main Thought
*The Christian life isn't primarily about asking God to help me build my life. It's about surrendering myself to the life God is building.*
Don't simply ask God to bless what you're trying to build. Surrender your life to Him, build on Christ, build with what lasts, and let the Builder fit you into something greater than yourself.
