This is basically "Friend like me" but there are two genies that hate each other and are competing to be your dad

People have already mentioned that Alastor’s voice is under a radio filter because he’s the Radio Demon (and was a radio host in life), but also, he has absolutely no interest in being Charlie’s dad, haha. He just hates Lucifer and knows that’s his weak spot.

And definitely listen to More Than Anything. Jeremy Jordan absolutely shines in that song.

If you wanna hear Luci's VA actually sing, check out More Than Anything!!! It shows his voice so beautifully, a complete 180 from the wacky tone this one has!

I love finding out that Charlie’s VA, Erika Hennigsen, went sort of fangirl when she heard Lucifer’s part of the duet they were recording. She yelled, “Oh my God! Is that JEREMY JORDAN???” The reply was “Yes, it is, actually. Do you know him?” She exclaimed “Of COURSE I know him! It’s JEREMY FREAKING JORDAN!” Apparently he’s a legend in the musical theater world.

I love that Mimzy cuts them off, because it doesn't let the song, or the rivalry, find an actual resolution.

Lucifer (the short blonde guy with the hat) is Charlie's father. Him and this song were inspired by Robin Williams Genie, and the song "Friend Like Me." Lucifer is voiced by Broadway actor, Jeremy Jordan. Alastor (the red guy) is the radio demon. So the filter is supposed to sound like a 1920's radio as he was a radio talk show host and serial killer in the 1920's.

The guy with the filter is Alastor. He was alive during the 1920s-30s and was a radio host. Now in Hell he's known as the radio demon and always has that radio-sounding voice, no matter if he's singing or just speaking. The filter only falls 2 times that I can think of in the entire show...and altogether he doesn't say any more than 10 words without the filter.

part of me was raging like "HIS VOICE IS LIKE THAT BC HES THE RADIO DEMON" and the other half of me was SO FREAKING HAPPY that the 1920's voice was that obvious
edit: HOLY SH 608 LIKES IN 4 DAYS WHAT IS HAPPENING!?!? TYSM AAAHHH!!

So, to explain Alastor, the deer-eared guy. He was a radio host in the 1920s, that’s why he has that filter over his voice.
The girl, Charlie, is the princess of Hell. The guy with the big hat is Lucifer.
Alastor always wants to have the upper hand. When Lucifer pops up there’s no way for him to match him power wise. So, he goes for the one card he has- his relationship with Charlie, since Lucifer has been a very absent father.
Also, Friend Like Me heavily inspired the song 🩵

One fun thing: since Hazbin Hotel started life as an independent youtube project, Vivzie (the creator) would post character designs and not-yet-used backstory bits on social media to keep engagement and interest up. Mimzy was a character design she did early, I believe before she ever even started Hazbin, that she kept saying she'd use someday. So when Mimzy busts in here her lyrics are both a show of her character and a direct joke to all the audience members who had been following the development for years and had been waiting to see what she'd be used in.

The accordion that Lucifer uses is a playful reference that he was almost voiced by Weird Al.

3:42 i think the vocal fry and things being a bit too high pitched is because he really really wants his daughter to like him and this is basically his sales pitch about why he should be the one helping her (his way of getting close to her) so he's nervous that she's going to tell him to go away and i think it comes across really well in his frantic way of singing 😭

I actually kinda love that you immediately clocked "Devil Went Down to Georgia" with the gold fiddle even though you seem to have been unaware (at time of filming) that the character in white is, in fact, The Devil lol. Nice one!

I recommend "Stayed Gone" (if you want to see more of Alastor/red character's voice work) or "More than Anything" (if you want to see more of Lucifer/character in white's voicework). More than Anything actually highlights how, despite doing more 'acting' than 'singing' in this song, the VA does actually have some pretty good musical range.

That character has that telethon voice ( Alastor)because hes the radio demon. He had a radio show when he was alive and also was a famous serial killer. Him and lucifer have beef because alastor has been more of a father to Charlie in the last 7 years than her own father has been( Lucifer was depressed for 7 years in his mansion making rubber ducks)because his wife left him and disappeared for 7 years.)so Alastor is basically rubbing it in his face saying I'm like a dad to you because your own dad couldn't be there for you.

@andreschion2334 1 year ago

I love how the song just accomplishes everything.
It even introduces a character the audience is supposed to hate by having her butt in and ruin a fun song.
