The way Horowitz plays Liszt is the way it should be.

Some of the most electrifying piano playing on record. Not for faint-hearted, nor for puritans. But true Lisztians would enjoy immensely these performances and arrangements.

He is playing his own version of the #2 rhapsody and at 7:24 or so it sounds like he has an extra hand and two brains.

Number 19 is especially mind boggling.

At five minutes comes the music Tom Lehrer used for “Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky” and it’s even funnier in Horowitz’s hands than “and den I write, by mornink, night, and efternoon, and pretty soon . . . “ in Lehrer’s!

Thanks to this video, I have now realized for the first time how amazing Horowitz is. All the recordings I had heard before seemed lacking compared to his reputation, but this performance is convincing.
