Imagine living so far away from civilization that your nearest grocery store is a six-hour drive away. Every drop of water you use has to be hauled from a freezing river, and instead of friendly neighbors next door, you're surrounded by wolves, moose, and bears. When winter arrives, temperatures can plummet to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, making even the simplest daily tasks a battle for survival. For most people, this sounds like the plot of a survival documentary. But for one remarkable family, it's simply everyday life.
Meet Dennis and Amy Westerlind, the husband-and-wife team behind the popular YouTube channel Holdfast Alaska. Surprisingly, neither of them grew up in the wilderness. They were both raised in the suburbs of New England, living a fairly ordinary life before meeting shortly after high school. Like many young couples, they started out in an apartment, but they soon realized that the traditional path of city living wasn't what they wanted. Instead of chasing bigger homes, higher-paying jobs, or the conveniences of modern life, they dreamed of something completely different, a place where they could build their own home, grow their own food, raise a family, and become as self-sufficient as possible.
