No parenting book sat on the coffee table next to the Jet magazine. No television doctor told your mother how to speak to your feelings.
By number one, you will hear your father's voice so plainly that you may look over your shoulder.
In this video:
✓ Ride in the back of the pickup
✓ Wait in the car
✓ Take your paddling at school
✓ Wear your key around your neck
✓ Tell the bill collector Mama is not home
✓ Stand by the open oven on cold mornings
✓ Sit still for the relaxer
✓ Light the firecrackers yourself
A generation raised by these rules now has grandchildren of its own. The key on the shoelace is long gone. So is the pickup truck with the tailgate down, and the corner store that sold a pack of cigarettes to a boy with a note.
Which of these rules did your house live by, and which one would you bring back if you could? Tell us in the comments, because somebody reading them grew up three streets over from you and has been waiting to hear that story.
Pass it to a sister, a cousin, or an old friend from the block, and let them remember too.

It was the code that made young people have an example to being an adult, but they also had discipline and community (because everyone knew every one else, therefore, everyone in the community have a job to make whatever community they find themselves in, those values are in them. They will seek it. As it was. They help to keep all the kids safe and out of danger and belonging. That has been lost, we must get it back and it's really not a lot of work. Show them by living it, teaching them.
There is power in unity.
Just think about it.
