The Hundred Years' War left France devastated and overrun by mercenary companies answerable only to their own captains. To restore order and finally oust the English, Charles VII banned private armies, instituted permanent taxes, and converted the best—and most daring—warriors into ordinance companies.

In this new episode, historian Klim Zhukov and host Alexander Kadira explore how France's first standing army was organized, who were called gendarmes in the 15th century, why archers were included in a single "lance," and why the famous English longbow ceased to be a decisive weapon. They also explore how heavy cavalry and new mobile artillery helped the French end the Hundred Years' War.
