Belize runs on American plugs — nothing to buy. The Philippines runs on 220 volts, and your coffee maker will not forgive you: https://amzn.to/3V7CFlc (Affiliate link — we earn a small commission, you pay nothing extra.)
$1,500 a month. The average Social Security check is $2,083 — so this is a life that costs less than your check, in a place where the pharmacist, the doctor and the tax office all speak English.
We ranked five beach towns where English is an official language by what $1,500 actually buys: rent, utilities with the air conditioning on, groceries, and the health cover most retirees there actually use. The cheapest comes in around $900 a month for a couple. The most famous one doesn't work at all.
Along the way: why Malta's retirement program eats your entire budget before you buy a grocery, why Medicare Part B keeps charging you in Belize for coverage that doesn't work in Belize, why every guide to the Philippine retirement visa is a year out of date — and the one SSA form that suspends more checks abroad than anything else.

▬ HOW WE COUNTED ▬
Every budget is for two people in a furnished one-bedroom, cooking at home, air conditioning in the evenings. Rents are asking rents from expat listings and cost-of-living trackers (Wise, Expat Exchange, International Living, citycost), not from a property portal — treat them as the middle of the market, not the floor. Groceries are an assumption: $300 a month for two in the Philippines, $350 in Corozal, $450 in Placencia. Health cover assumes PhilHealth plus cash in the Philippines and cash in Belize; comprehensive international insurance at 65 runs $300–500 per person per month and would break every budget on this list.
Visa figures from the Malta Retirement Programme Rules, the Belize Tourism Board (QRP), and the Philippine Retirement Authority (SRRV Classic, September 2025 rules: $15,000 deposit at 50+ with a pension of $800+/month). Medicare figures from CMS for 2026: Part B $202.90/month, late-enrollment penalty 10% per 12 months without coverage. Euro figures for Malta converted at $1.15.
Not included: flights home, dental, a car, savings. This video is not tax, legal, immigration or financial advice.
▬ WHAT WE DON'T KNOW ▬
Hurricane frequency for southern Belize and typhoon frequency for Negros — we didn't find figures we trust, so we don't quote any. Check the track history yourself before you commit.
▬ IF YOU LIVE IN ONE OF THESE PLACES ▬
Put your real monthly total in the comments, with the town. That's worth more to the people watching than anything we can research from a desk.
