Deep in the Brazilian Cerrado, the Rio Cristalino is one of those rivers that seems to hide as much as it reveals.

Its clear waters flow through a fascinating landscape before becoming part of the Rio das Mortes system — a region where two very different worlds of water, fish and habitat come together.

In this video, I explore the underwater life of the Rio Cristalino and introduce some of the remarkable fish that inhabit this river. From specialized algae-eating species and powerful predators to colorful characins, cichlids and armored catfish, this river is home to an incredible diversity of freshwater life.

Among the species featured are fascinating fishes such as Tometes ancylorhynchus, Boulengerella cuvieri, Prochilodus lineatus, Prochilodus nigricans, Retroculus lapidifer, Saxatilia labrina, Cyphocharax gouldingi, Hypostomus ericae and Hypostomus delimai.

Some of these fish are perfectly adapted to fast-flowing water, while others are specialists of the rocky river habitats, quiet pools and vegetation along the riverbanks.

Join me underwater as we explore the Rio Cristalino and discover the fish, habitats and hidden details of one of Brazil's fascinating freshwater ecosystems.
