X2 is officially gone from Six Flags Magic Mountain — so what could possibly replace one of the most unique roller coasters ever built? In this video, I’m ranking five coaster concepts that could make sense for the park’s next massive thrill ride.

X2 wasn’t just another coaster. It was one of Magic Mountain’s signature attractions and helped define the park’s reputation as the Thrill Capital of the World.

So whatever eventually replaces it needs to be something special.

In this video, I break down five possible roller coaster replacements for X2, including different manufacturers, coaster models, and concepts that could potentially fit Magic Mountain’s future.

Which type of coaster would YOU build in X2’s place? Let me know your #1 choice in the comments.

I have never been on it, but to me anything other than an improved controlled 4D of the same scale would be a disappointment—including an Axis coaster, and especially a giga.

Six Flags literally said “We recognize the special place X2 holds in the coaster community”.

I believe they said this intentionally as a way to let us know they still care about us and the popular 4D controlled spin model. Cmon Six Flags, please reimagine X2 and bring back the 4D coaster better than ever, with comfort as the #1 priority! Maybe even make it a 4D controlled spin launch coaster!

The ride only became an issue with people getting hurt. Create a MODERN 4D controlled spin ride where people CAN’T get hurt, and you have a win. Also make it extra unique by switching it up, making it a LAUNCH coaster instead, and changing up the theming from the whole X campaign due to the bad media press. Save most of the structure since it’s already well overbuilt and the foundation is in place.

It’s the only right thing to do. And when it’s time to retire Viper, replace it with a record breaking Vekoma tilt coaster, that has a mid course launch.

I don't think that a B&M wing coaster would be a good option to pay homage for X2 for the fact that the ride would likely be compared to X2 for the fact that it's a wing coaster on X2's plot of land, intending to homage it, and then getting negative feedback based on not being as intense or as daring as X2, calling it a big disappointment for such an iconic coaster, which could be undeserved but understandable reputation for the coaster. Not saying that a wing coaster would be a bad fit for Six Flags Magic Mountain with the wing gimmick being different enough from the other B&Ms there, but I do think that it would be a bit disrespectful towards X2's legacy being such a radical and intense thrill ride.

Before magic takes on replacing X2 they have to first address the samurai summit area of the park and figure out what to do with superman. That entire area of the park is a disaster. We unfortunately may see the closure of ninja if that happens but something needs to be done up there.

Magic Mountain is the fourth most profitable park in the chain behind Knott's, Cedar Point and Kings Island and it's just barely behind Cedar Point and Kings Island. And one of two open all year. They have said increasing attendance at Magic Mountain to more than Knott's is a priority. This isn't going to change that plan and the lawsuit for the death was active when it was said. This was probably something they knew was coming and knew to have plans which they probably have moved some future coaster from another park to Magic Mountain. The SoCal area where 1 in 10 Americans live can support it and also magic mountain not cedar point was the park everyone knew about across the country because it's part of pop culture, Summer Vacation, Encino Man etc. and the land around magic mountain is more rural than urban and with its winds and fire risk the land isn't as valuable as you think

I really don’t want viper to leave with all of my heart but that idea is pretty cool and it could be called Vipers Revenge or smth like that

@Lopez-o1w 5 days ago

Everyone saying the park is going to be sold is crazy. I just think they haven’t been investing in the park as much and aren’t steering it into the right direction.

I personally won’t be happy if it’s not X3 or a Mack Rides Xtreme Spinner. None of the coasters on the list compare to X2, huge downgrades.

I’m prepared to be let down, though. Who knows how long it will be vacant for.

Outside of TC, the park has a great collection of supporting coasters, which is why I am against the idea of a new B&M Wing Coaster. I'm with you, a Giga like Fury (not Orion) is what the park needs for that one, two punch it lost with X2's closure.

@zacg_ 5 days ago

I'm sorry you never got to ride X2 Brandon. I guess a lot of enthusiasts now feel all the more pressure to plan an Asia trip some day.

@3dpete1 5 days ago

the definitive replacement solution is...... for RMC to rebuild X2 from the ground up with Eejanaika's layout (and maybe, you know, add a "thing" or two, as RMC does). Problem SOLVED!

@Pseudoreflexionen 5 days ago

Six Flags Magic Mountain is the mother of all thrill parks. Closing it would be an admission of bankruptcy for the chain! Perhaps they could build a B&M XXL Wing Coaster, or a new Mack installation featuring a turntable, an extreme spinning coaster, and a Stryker Coaster—or an intense, world-first multi-launch coaster from Intamin.

@casaufccasaufc3578 4 days ago

Just have the company who build Eejanaika build X3 but taller, Faster and bigger would be amazing there is zero issues with Eejanaika and Dinocanda.

I agree a B&M wing coaster is most likely. Several reasons:

1) It can fill X2's current station. No need to build a new one. A B&M dive could be built mostly on Viper's plot.

2) Tilt coasters are compact enough that Knott's could get one. But Knott's does not have the space for a B&M wing. (Same goes for competitors like Universal and Disney. And if Legoland built one, it'd be like Maximus at their German property)

3) There's space by the pick up / drop off loop to build a keyhole near-miss around a dive loop as the turnaround. Huge visual impact by the entrance.

4) Including Thrill Glider, Magic Mountain has 5 coasters between 105 and 135 ft tall. The others are Batman, Revolution, Twisted Colossus, and Wonder Woman. They also have 3 coasters between 150-165 ft tall (Full Throttle, Riddler, and Scream)

But with X2 gone, the only coasters between 165-200' tall are Tatsu and Viper. With Viper potentially closing within the next decade, they need another hyper coaster with a lift just under 200' tall and a first drop just over 200'. A B&M wing can fill that niche well

5) As with Son of Beast's closure, Six Flags will prioritize a model that's as reliable as possible while imposing a large, dominant presence. A B&M wing checks those boxes.

While a Mack XSC would be more thrilling, those coasters aren't usually large enough to match X2 as a "statement piece" as guests pull up to the parking tolls. And Magic Mountain probably recognizes that no spinning coaster they can afford will top Hollywood Drift. They have a family spinner in the area with Sierra Sidewinder. So they'll probably cede the extreme spin niche to Universal.

The question is whether Magic Mountain will prioritize this within the next 5 years, like building Banshee to replace Son of Beast. Or if they'll hold off for a while like Kings Island has with Vortex. Considering Magic Mountain wasn't expecting to close it so soon, I wouldn't be surprised if a Samauri Summit overhaul with Ninja / Gold Rusher replacement happens first. Will be interesting to see how crowd patterns shift with X2 gone and Thrill Glider open next year.

@fawful7457 5 days ago

Magic Mountain is gonna be yet another Great Adventure with this transformative phase that they're gonna go through in the next 5 years or so. Like yeah, attendance will drop and people (including myself) are more distraught over the closure of X2 than Kingda Ka, but I see long-term investment coming here as Magic Mountain IS indeed a core park.

@AlvinPeng-i9z 5 days ago

My idea is to remove viper alongside X2 and build like a massive RMC T-rex or something

@winningfreak1 5 days ago

If they go with the Wing coaster they could likely reuse the station which would be a big money saver

@quentenmajoor5861 5 days ago

I think the best option would either be a Mack Extreme Spinner or a Giga Coaster.

@oneshadyalien79 4 days ago

I want an intamin giga for X2’s place but i want it to be intense like X2 because the intensity is part of what made X2 good. If intimin cant do it then a B&M giga will do. Im glad you didn’t say a mack extreme spinner because they are so lame imo.
