Why have we come to this material world? In this profound lecture, His Divine Grace Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the living entity tries to imitate the Lord by becoming an enjoyer and this very desire brings him into the material world. The real identity of the soul is a servant of Kṛṣṇa, not an enjoyer, as explained in Bhagavad-gītā 7.15.

Through simple, everyday examples, Śrīla Prabhupāda shows that earth, water, fire, air, mind and intelligence all belong to the Lord, not to us, as stated in Bhagavad-gītā 7.4. Anyone who claims ownership of these without understanding this truth is compared to a thief, according to Bhagavad-gītā 3.12. This is why scripture prescribes yajña — using what the Lord provides only after offering it to Him with gratitude. Śrīla Prabhupāda also explains that the Lord personally takes care of every need of His devotees, as promised in Bhagavad-gītā 9.22, yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham and he shares a personal experience from his own life to illustrate this truth.

The lecture also makes the true purpose of human life clear in plain language — merely eating, sleeping and seeking sense gratification is animal life, while human life is meant to rise above this. Śrīla Prabhupāda gives the real definition of bhakti as well — devotional service performed with a pure mind, free from all false designations. If you wish to understand the true purpose of life and your real relationship with the Lord, this lecture is essential listening.
