I have been making cards for 30 years so have a life time of loud patterns or too large/small designs on them. Try using a stencil that is smaller or larger than the design you are covering. The difference in size will push the bold paper pattern to the back. I also use white and black inks with a stencil - a small pattern stencil with black or white turns the background into a monochrome color to your eye. I use stencils that are simple shapes, smaller than the pattern, in a color close to the dominant color on the paper or black/white, and sometimes use texture pastes or crackle medium. If your efforts didn't work out, turn it over and make your own design on the white back.

I make 90% alcohol inks with dying magic marker wicks. I apply with paint brush. Similar result to what you are doing. I use to remove white i dont like
