A violent storm on the Cornish coast leaves two travellers stranded for the night. Seeking shelter, they follow a lonely lane to the apparently deserted Cliff House, where a warm fire offers welcome refuge from the darkness outside.
But they are not alone.
A frightened little girl appears with a simple request—to warm herself by the fire—and before the night is over, the travellers will discover why some memories refuse to remain buried.
Frederick Cowles was a prolific British writer of supernatural and macabre fiction whose work has become surprisingly neglected. The End of the Lane is a wonderfully traditional ghost story: atmospheric, uncomplicated and deliciously eerie.
