My great grandfather on my mother side of my family was aboard a US Navy transport vessel as the captain and he operated both in the Pacific and the Atlantic. With his ship being transferred from one to the other as needed. I never met him in person he died before I was born. But I did read three full journals worth of his his handwritten notes and everything about the conflict. He’d actually served as one of the various naval attaché personnel for the United States military in Japan in the years leading up to World War II. He never actually had any interaction with any major individuals on the war, but he knew how the Japanese behaved.

A lot of people don’t realize this, but one major difference between the American military, and the Japanese military is in many ways. The Japanese military refused to adapt as the war went on. Now this wasn’t always the case some of their equipment for example that was initially made out of leather in the early times of the war was adapted into canvas and stuff because the leather accoutrements didn’t tend to hold up very well in the hot and humid environment of the southern Pacific. One area where the Japanese seemingly refused to alter their strategies and everything were when it came to combat. Even when they were losing the Japanese seemingly only ever wanted to fight offensively. The Japanese military of World War II was not designed to be a defensive force. Their entire military doctrine was around advancing. And as we all know pretty much every Japanese weapon from the standard service rifle to even certain general purpose machine guns would literally be equipped with bayonet lugs so that it could be used in a bayonet charge.

One thing that a lot of people don’t technically realize is unlike in the United States, where certain soldiers, sailors, airman, and stuff like that would be brought back to the US to train, newer recruits and to use their real world experiences to help modify the training and everything the Japanese left their individuals out there basically in perpetuity. This is one of the reasons why, as the war went on the pilots of the imperial Japanese navy and imperial Japanese army Air Force got less less skilled as the war went on all of their highly experienced flight. Cruise were killed off over the course of the war. Meanwhile, the United States, for example, would have some of its best scoring pilots and everything rotated back towards US lines and then stateside where they would go on to explain and teach the next generation of pilots. At the same time, the US also was constantly evolving its equipment. Remember at the start of World War II in the Pacific the a 6M0 Mill by Mitsubishi was pretty much the stealth fighter of its day. In fact, following the events of I believe it was 1940 when the American volunteer group better known as the flying tigers sent some information about the capabilities of the Japanese Navy aircraft to the United States the letter that was received back by the leader of the American volunteer group. Claire Shenault came with the response of as follows “bunk. Such an aircraft is an aerodynamic impossibility”

The United States military and the US government refused to accept the fact that the Japanese were able to create such a sophisticated aircraft for the early war. Meanwhile, in the United States propaganda had portrayed the Japanese as a little more than rats and stuff like that. In fact, if you actually look at wartime comic books from the era, things like Batman and Superman, and all the other superheroes that were around, you noticed that the Japanese are depicted in one of three ways. They either have buck teeth, fangs, or they have thick coke bottle style glasses. Obviously, they are basically designed to make the Japanese look as ugly and unhuman as possible.
