Tonight, fall asleep inside one ordinary New England farmhouse on a winter evening in 1776, told slowly, room by room, from the last light in the dooryard down into the sleeping house. This was a world lit by a single candle carried from place to place, even though a family burned 300 to 400 of them across a year, and warmed by an open hearth that ate 30 to 40 cords of wood in a single winter. A laboring man earned 2 or 3 shillings for a full day's work, yet the family's best bed was worth more than three cows and stood on proud display in the parlor. And in the deepest part of the night they did something we have entirely forgotten how to do. They woke, on purpose, into a quiet hour between two separate sleeps.

In this video, we spend one whole ordinary evening inside a colonial home, including the last light in the dooryard, the great walk-in hearth, the single candle carried from room to room, the small shared supper eaten from a wooden trencher, the spinning and mending by firelight, the reading aloud and the yearly almanac, the family prayer, the children's bedtime and their old whispered prayer, the warming of the cold beds with a brass pan, the barring of the door and the banking of the fire, and the strange gentle rhythm of the two sleeps of the colonial night.
