Why are Bengaluru Lakes Dry? Ulsoor, Nagavara and Hebbal Lakes are Dried for Desiliting
Ulsoor Lake (Halasuru Lake)
-Ulsoor Lake has been drained for its first major desilting in nearly 20 years.
-Over decades, mud and debris reduced the lake's depth and water storage capacity.
-Desilting will help restore water storage, improve groundwater recharge, and enhance water quality.
-The historic 108-acre lake dates back to the 16th century and is one of Bengaluru's oldest lakes.
-Once the work is complete, the lake will refill naturally with the monsoon
Hebbal Lake
-Hebbal Lake is also undergoing desilting as part of Bengaluru's flood mitigation programme.
-Removing accumulated silt increases the lake's water-holding capacity.
-Cleaner inlets and silt traps will reduce pollution entering the lake.
-The project aims to improve both urban flood resilience and the lake's ecosystem.
Nagavara Lake
-Nagavara Lake has been temporarily drained for a large-scale rejuvenation project.
-The 98-acre lake is getting desilted after years of sediment accumulation.
-New inlets, outlets and silt traps are being built to improve water circulation and quality.
-The lake's wetlands are also being restored as part of the project.
-The work is expected to improve flood management across north Bengaluru
These lake restoration works are part of a larger stormwater and flood mitigation programme funded through a World Bank loan, implemented by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) through its Project Implementation Unit (PIU). The objective is not just to beautify lakes, but to reduce urban flooding by restoring lake storage and improving the stormwater network
